The Crookedest Railroad in the World

From the transcontinental connection in Reno to the terminating point of Virginia City, the Virgina & Truckee Railroad stretches a total of 52 miles in length from point to point, not including the numerous miles of siding track. Nothing short of an industrial marvel showcasing remarkable engineering feats to wonder at, the railroad descends 1,600 feet in 13½ miles from the mountain mines of Virginia City with a 2.2% grade down to the mills dotted along the Carson River that would be an equivalent of 17 complete circles.
